Beginner hikers often pay less attention to their nutrition while hiking, but during active physical activity, such as hiking, the body needs the full range of nutrients. Also, your feeling and mood during a hike depends on the food.

Most food products cannot always be stored for a long time without a fridge, and they are usually heavy and take up a lot of space in a backpack. Manufacturers of special hiking food have managed to minimize the weight of the products without losing their quality and nutrients.

Types of hiking food. Dehydrated and freeze-dried backpacking food

There are 2 main types of hiking food:

Freeze-dried food for hiking is more difficult to produce. During the production process, the weight of the product is minimized, and all the nutrients are preserved, because the product is not heated. Freeze-drying is the removal of water from frozen foods using a vacuum. The food is made from natural ingredients and contains no preservatives or flavors. Thus, we have a product that is optimal for a backpacking trip: it is as healthy as possible and lightweight at the same time. Freeze-dried food is well stored even in conditions close to extreme. To prepare such a meal while hiking, you just need to pour boiling water over the contents of the bag and wait about 10 minutes.

Dehydrated food for hiking is another way to prepare special food for backpackers. Such products are lightweight and easy to carry. The price of dehydrated products is lower than freeze-dried ones. But during the drying process, food loses 20-40% of its nutrients. Some nutrients are lost during the thermal processing of the product. The principle of cooking dehydrated food is the same as freeze-dried food.
